VISUAL LANGUAGE

Scott Albrecht, Ramsey Dau, D*Face, Shepard Fairey, Guerilla Girls, Jenny Holzer, Chad Kouri, Nathaniel Russell, Betty Tomkins, Wayne White

Faction Art Projects 14th September – 6th October

Curated in collaboration between Subliminal Projects in East Los Angeles, and newly established FACTION Art Projects in Harlem, New York City. Visual Language is a bi-coastal group exhibition investigating various approaches to the use of words and images in art and Western Culture.

Visual Language examines the integration of word and image into art, bringing together a broad spectrum of alternative strategies for expressing contemporary everyday experiences.

The exhibition will run in simultaneously at Subliminal Projects and Faction Art Projects. The tone of the works gathered in Visual Language reflects each artist’s diversity, ranging from political, ironic, poetic, typographic, and abstract. In each gallery the artworks will work in parallel or collaboratively, while others will juxtapose and subvert, offering a strong critical frame through which to view contemporary culture in this period of “fake news” and “alternative facts.”

ABOUT SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS

Subliminal, was originally created by Shepard Fairey and Blaize Blouin as an artist collective in 1995. The group played an integral part in introducing skateboarding culture and design to the art world, showcasing artists such as Phil Frost, Thomas Campbell, Mike Mills, Dave Aaron, and Mark Gonzales.

Amanda and Shepard Fairey continued to host and curate exhibitions that featured artists such as Ryan McGinness, HunterGatherer, David Ellis, Doze Green, Aesthetic Apparatus, Space Invader, Jim Houser and Andrew Jeffery Wright. In 2003, the SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS gallery was officially opened in the Los Angeles offices of Studio Number One. The scope of the gallery remained true to its roots while embracing new forms of graphic art, illustration, photography and time-based media.

Now located in the historic Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park, Subliminal Projects continues to offer a platform for artistic exploration and innovation. The perennial schedule includes art exhibitions by established and emerging artists, as well as a lecture series, workshops and artist publications.

ABOUT FACTION ART PROJECTS

ACTION is a new flexible collective, from the team behind the hugely successful Gallery 8 and Coates & Scarry in London, who in this, their foray into the US, are adapting a unique model for artists and gallerists to work together.

FACTION is a new response to the changing market place and the erosion of the traditional art market, where galleries were gatekeepers for artists. FACTION aims to reimagine these relationships through unique collaborative projects, either curated by the team themselves, or by talented guest curators.

FACTION provides artists with promotion and opportunity to access collectors and a wider audience, with all the support of a gallery but without the constraints of the traditional model.
